MB Comment: A new study from California just found that “The vast majority of these [pertussis cases] were fully-vaccinated children,” Dr. David Witt, the medical center’s chief of infectious diseases, said in a press briefing during the meeting. “That was the surprise.”
It shouldn’t be a surprise to Refusers Newsroom readers. Our August 6th article Effectiveness of DTaP Wanes Substantially Over Time pointed out that the DTaP vaccine is not bactericidal, it does not prevent infection with the Bordetella pertussis bacterium. Vaccinated individuals can carry the pertussis bacteria and spread it to others. When public health officials blame outbreaks of pertussis on the unvaccinated, they are demonstrating their ignorance about the function of the pertussis vaccine. It is basically a cough suppressant, it is designed to reduce symptoms of pertussis infection (whooping cough). Incidentally, the DTaP vaccine package insert lists Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Autism as ‘adverse events reported during post-approval use.’ ‘Events were included in this list because of the seriousness or frequency of reporting.’
Vaccine failure is a concept that pseudo-scientists can’t accept. If a licensed vaccine fails, their response is always: We need to vaccinate more. Follow the logic? This vaccine doesn’t work, so do it more. Consider the analogy of a diet based on eating jelly donuts. The dieter notices that he is gaining weight on his jelly donut diet, so he concludes he needs to eat more jelly donuts to follow his diet and lose more weight. He can’t admit that eating jelly donuts doesn’t prevent obesity.
For public health officials and the medical profession, this is where science degenerates into pseudo-science. The scientific method is based on observation of data and unbiased conclusions of what the data indicates. When scientists override what the data shows with their own preconceived biases they become pseudo-scientists.
The data shows that vaccinated individuals are getting pertussis, just as the definition of the pertussis vaccine would suggest. Instead of admitting vaccine failure, to support their preconceived and scientifically inaccurate bias that pertussis vaccine prevents pertussis infection, they will probably soon recommend another pertussis booster shot and when that doesn’t work, another, etc. ad nauseam.
We have a Refusers song on this subject entitled Crazy Cult. The lyrics are:
Cause this ain’t science no
It’s just a crazy cult
Vaccine religion (it’s a cult)
Vaccine religion (crazy cult)

Did Poor Vaccine Response Contribute to California’s Whooping Cough Outbreak?
Wired Magazine Sep 19, 2011
Physicians from the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, California say they have found an unexpected amount of pertussis — whooping cough — in pre-teen children who had received their mandatory school-entry vaccination booster at age 5 and should have been protected from the disease until about the time of their final childhood booster dose at age 12 …
“The vast majority of these were fully-vaccinated children,” Dr. David Witt, the medical center’s chief of infectious diseases, said in a press briefing during the meeting. “That was the surprise.” …
In their ICAAC paper, the researchers concluded: “Acellular pertussis boosters are effective but less durable than previously thought. Vaccine guidelines and pertussis control measures need to be reconsidered.” …
“In California we have ‘personal belief exemptions’ [from mandatory vaccination] of 3 percent to 10 percent per county,” he said. “If you have 10 percent unvaccinated, and the vaccine efficacy is 85 percent, then you’re talking about only 75 percent” of the population at best who are protected, he said …
When asked if vaccine schedules need to be reworked to protect children in the 8-12-year-old group, for instance by adding or moving up a booster, he replied that it would be important first to find whether the same results have been observed elsewhere. In the meantime, he added, health officials might consider administering boosters to pre-teens during outbreaks, in order to repair any gaps in immunity such as Kaiser observed.
